The motion of an inclusion coupled to the surrounding fluid shows several levels of complexity depending on the number of degrees of freedom of the inclusions, their number, the nature of the flow (laminar or turbulent) as well as many other factors such as the deformability of the particles, the action of external fields,... The team EDT investigates the fundamental mechanisms of the particle-flow interaction at these levels of complexity.
The team EDT studied for many years the properties of bubble columns in the strong coupling regime (picture below). Recently the case of a freely advected, isolated dense particle has been studied revealing the difficulty to model the impact of the finite size of the particle. It led to study simpler setups. The investigations of the team EDT (mostly experimental) span a large variety of coupling situations, from the isolated particle in a laminar flow to the collective dynamics of particles in a turbulent flow in order to contribute to modeling the transport of particle in a large variety of conditions

The secondary air flow sealing the helicopter turbine engine (gas turbine) forms an oil mist as it passes through the bearings lubricated. The separation of these oil inclusions is a key issue (...)
