Title : Flexible particles in turbulence
Contact : Nathanael Machicoane
Abstract : More and more studies in Lagrangian turbulence are devoted to anisotropic particles due to their numerous applications in both environmental flows (cloud formation, plastic pollution in the ocean, ...) and industrial flows (paper making industry, textile industry, ...). In general, in these works, only rigid particles are considered. However, when the slenderness of the particle increases its flexibility also increases. One can then wonder when do particles deform in a turbulent flow and if these deformations can modify their transport.
In this presentation, I will characterize the transition from rigid to flexible particles and then the deformations of long fibers. Finally, I will discuss a possible application to the modeling of the formation of microplastic in the ocean.
